I was cooking dinner and needed a plate, so I went into the other room and there in our front yard were Elephants! They grazed so silently, like grey ghosts in the after dusk light, that I almost missed them. I grabbed Emma and switched off the lights and we stood at the window and absorbed the munching, sighing and huffing sounds.
There were all sizes, from tiny babies to grandmothers that blocked out the moon rising behind them. They had no fear and came almost onto the porch to reach the sweet grass growing under our downspout. The herd moved slowly, taking what they wanted as they went past the house and into the bush. This is supposed to be a common occurence and it really makes living at Mpala a priviledge.
